A new survey by Consumer Reports highlights the importance of careful shopping and planned maintenance.
Not too long ago, hardly anyone had a Seattle air conditioner. But times have changed. A growing number of Seattle households are equipped with air conditioners to stave off the summer heat. Central air conditioners aren’t cheap, so it makes sense for homeowners to shop carefully and take good care of their air conditioning systems to maximize their investments.
Consumer Reports recently surveyed more than 40,000 subscribers with air conditioning systems. 10% of those polled said that they their air conditioners required repeated repairs in the first year, and 18% reported that their systems broke down completely. 39% said that they lost air conditioning for at least a day. And about 30% of those with air conditioning problems had to fork out over $150 to get their systems fixed.
To avoid having to call a repairman in the midst of a heat wave, Consumer Reports recommends buyers to replace aging air conditioners. Furthermore, buyers are encouraged to choose their air conditioning systems more carefully, as some brands are more prone to repairs than others. At MM Comfort Systems, we offer a variety of air conditioning systems from Carrier, a world leader in air conditioning and heating systems with a presence in nearly every geographic market. Take the Performance/Comfort Series 24APA7 Central Air Conditioner, for example. Pictured below, this model offers a great mix of reliability and cooling efficiency:
Another reliable central air conditioning system that’s unmatched in terms of eco-friendliness is the Infinity 21 Series 24ANA1 Series Air Conditioner, which utilizes environmentally-sound Puron® refrigerant.
Once you have a reliable Seattle air conditioner installed, it’s important to have it inspected by a professional at the beginning and end of every cooling season to avoid service problems. With preventative maintenance, homeowners can ensure that their air conditioners make it through a heat wave. The Consumer Reports survey also found that homeowners who hired a Seattle HVAC company to install their air conditioners instead of letting their homebuilders do the hiring dealt with significantly fewer repairs.
Other things that Consumer Reports recommends homeowners to do in order to keep their air conditioners in good condition, save energy, and lower air conditioning costs include the following:
- Seal and insulate every duct (30-40% of energy can escape when ducts aren’t insulated)
- Use a programmable thermostat and set the temperature higher while out of the house
- Clean filters and grills monthly
- Keep plants and hedges at least two feet away from the air conditioning unit
