The home heating/cooling industry is entering a period of profound change. Doing a terrific job servicing and installing furnaces, heat pumps, air conditioners and water heaters will no longer be good enough. In fact, doing these things alone will actually be letting homeowners down.
Why? Because there is more to the story. Most existing homes were built using design and installation standards we now understand to be unacceptable. For example, most ductwork leaks badly and is not properly insulated. Connecting a high-efficiency furnace to leaky ductwork will not solve the underlying problem (think opportunity) of excessive energy use and poor indoor air quality. Duct work should be pressure tested and brought up to standard prior to installing new equipment.
Fixing duct work in conjunction with other improvements such as adding attic insulation can allow installation of a lower capacity, less expensive furnace. A heat loss calculation reflecting actual home conditions should always be done prior to the sizing and selection of equipment.
